The Sharks are the Absa Currie Cup champions for 2010 after they defeated Vodacom Western Province 30-10 at The Absa Stadium Durban.

Currie Cup Final Winners The Sharks

The 20-year-old Patrick Lambie, who celebrated his inclusion to the Springbok End-of-Year touring squad after the final, was the star performer for the hosts after scoring 25 points in this game. He added a brace of tries and also kicked three conversions and three penalties.

The Durban side entertained the 52,000 sellout crowd with their superb and entertaining attacking brand of rugby during the first half and were rewarded with two tries which were scored by Absa Currie Cup Man of the Match Lambie and scrumhalf Charl McLeod.

In the second half, and with Vodacom Western Province chasing the game at 23-10, The Sharks then shifted gear and backed up their flamboyant approach during the first 40 minutes with a resolute defensive effort which kept their Cape opponents scoreless in the second half.

The Sharks success in the final was built around their physical forwards who dominated the collisions and the breakdown. The physicality of the likes of Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel and Bismarck du Plessis were instrumental in allowing the hosts momentum while their efforts were backed up by a masterful performance of their 20-year-old pivot Lambie.

Centre Andries Strauss playing in his final game for the Durban side, along with Alberts and Du Plessis were then some of the stars for the hosts on defence. Province boasted the majority of the second half’s possession, but were unable to break the brave defensive systems of the Durban side.

Vodacom Western Province’s only points’ were scored in the first half. Captain Schalk Burger powered his way over The Sharks try line shortly before the break. His five-pointer was converted by pivot Willem de Waal who also added a penalty during the opening minutes of the game.

De Waal ended the season as the competition’s leading points’ scorer with 220. Lambie ended in second place with 205.

“The way we played as a team was amazing,” said The Sharks coach John Plumtree.

“But the big thing here is that it doesn’t matter which individuals you have, this was a team effort. Nobody gave us a chance in the build up to this game. The experts were writing us off, and that motivated us. Then the crowd got behind us and really helped us get the win.

“We had to hang on defensively and I think the crowd helped us tremendously along the way. This is possibly one of our best team efforts if you consider that we just beat two Vodacom Super 14 finalists to get this trophy. That can’t be underestimated.”

The victory for the hosts ensured that they maintained their undefeated run at home this season.  The hosts recorded eight home wins this season which included a semi-final victory over the Vodacom Blue Bulls (16-12), Platinum Leopards (63-6), Vodacom Free State Cheetahs (30-16), GWK Griquas (48-30), Vodacom Western Province (27-16), Xerox Lions (48-19), Vodacom Blue Bulls (34-28) and the Barloworld Toyota Pumas (27-17).

The defeat for Vodacom Western Province was their fourth loss on the road during this season’s competition. They conceded defeats against the Vodacom Blue Bulls (36-32) in Pretoria, Xerox Lions (46-28) in Johannesburg and went down to The Sharks (27-16) in Durban during their league fixture in August.

“I am very disappointed with the loss but we must give credit to The Sharks,” said Vodacom WP coach Allister Coetzee.

“We did not manage to keep enough ball in hand, we made lots of mistakes and that really cost us. We found ourselves 23-3 down after the first 17 minutes; that was tough and then our mistakes were punished.

“We knew that The Sharks were a team that liked to counter-attack, so we refrained from kicking on their back three. But we gave away too many turnovers and they were good at taking advantage of those opportunities.”

WEEK 10Currie Cup Week 10

Vodacom Western Province ended their three week losing streak in the Absa Currie Cup on Saturday and resurrected their aspirations of qualifying for the competition’s semi-finals following their 59-17 victory over the Platinum Leopards at Newlands on Saturday.

Allister Coetzee’s men recently conceded defeats against the Xerox Lions (46-28), Vodacom Free State Cheetahs (29-24) and The Sharks (27-16). But on Saturday, the Cape side ended their lapse in form after they ran in nine tries before outclassing their opponents.

The victory for Vodacom WP ensured that they ended week 10 in second position with 33 points. They are still eight points behind The Sharks who are currently in pole position following their 30-14 win over the Barloworld Toyota Pumas in Witbank on Friday night.

Coetzee’s troops are now also one point clear of the third-placed Vodacom Free State Cheetahs who consigned the Vodacom Blue Bulls to their fifth defeat of the competition following their win 20-14 victory at Vodacom Park on Saturday.

The defeat for the defending champions ensured that they ended week 10 in fifth place on the Absa Currie Cup log with log with 29 points.

The Xerox Lions continued their progressive form in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup after they defeated the GWK Griquas 40-29 at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday afternoon. The hosts, who secured their fifth straight victory in this season’s competition in Johannesburg, are now in fourth position on the log with 30 points.

Vodacom WP who welcomed back their Springbok stars – Jean de Villiers, Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh, struggled initially to find their rhythm at Newlands before their kicked into gear against their struggling opponents.

The defeat for the Platinum Leopards was their 10th straight loss in the competition. Chaka Willlemse’s outfit are languishing in 8th position on the Absa Currie Cup and are already facing the impending task of battling it out in next month’s promotion/ relegation matches for survival in next year’s Premier Division competition.

Flanker Francois Louw scored a brace of tries while prop Brok Harris, hooker Deon Fourie, flanker Nick Koster, scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenhage, lock Anton van Zyl, centre De Jongh and reserve loose-forward Yaya Hartzenberg.

Flyhalf Lionel Cronje who enjoyed his first start in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup for Vodacom Western Province in place of regular No 10 Willem de Waal, kicked four conversions. De Waal though converted three five-pointers in the second half.

In Johannesburg, SA Under-20 utility back Jaco Taute scored a brace of tries as the youthful resurgence of the Xerox Lions continued at Coca-Cola Park.

Taute once again looked impressive on attack, as did his fellow Baby Boks and Xerox Lions teammate Elton Jantjies. The pivot dictated play and successfully kicked four penalties and four conversions to end the game with a personal points haul of 20.

GWK Griquas scored two tries which were added by wingers Rocco Jansen and Bjorn Basson (14) – who is the leading try-scorer in this season’s competition. The Kimberley side have now suffered five defeats in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup. They would now have to quickly regain their form that saw them topple The Sharks and the Xerox Lions earlier in the competition if they are to remain as genuine semi-final contenders in preparation of next month’s playoffs.

The Sharks bounced back to winning ways following their 40-34 defeat against the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Pretoria last weekend when they secured maximum points from their trip to Witbank on Friday evening.

Wingers Lwazi Mvovo and Odwa Ndungane, flanker Jacques Botes and hooker Craig Burden all added tries for the visitors. SA Under-20 fullback Patrick Lambie kicked two conversions and two penalties for the Durban side.

Meanwhile the Vodacom Blue Bulls’ aspirations of defending their Absa Currie Cup suffered another blow in Bloemfontein on Saturday night after they were relegated to fifth position on the 2010 log.

The defending champions only managed to score one try which was thanks to the efforts of veteran Jaco van der Westhuyzen. The hosts to their credit played most of the rugby and were rewarded with two five-pointers which were scored by flanker Hendro Scholtz and talented flanker Philip van der Walt.

Vodacom Blue Bulls flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter kept the defending champions in the game with his reliable boot after he converted three penalty kicks. The Pretoria side though are back at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, but will have to tame a youthful Xerox Lions side who will be aiming to consign the defending champions to their sixth defeat of the 2010 competition.

Lambie’s individual performance with the boot for the Durban side ensured that he ended week nine as the leading points’ scorer in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup -132 points. GWK Griquas pivot Naas Olivier is currently in second position with 129 after he notched up 18 points during his side’s 33-28 defeat against the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in Kimberley on Friday evening.

Winger Joni Nokwe ran in a brace of tries for the Bloemfontein side while No 8 Ashley Johnson added his side’s third. Louis Strydom kicked three penalties and three conversions, while Meyer Bosman also added one penalty. Captain Olivier, Cecil Kemp and Burger Schoeman ran in tries for the GWK Griquas.

Meanwhile in Johannesburg, former SA Under-20 flyhalf Elton Jantjies scored 31 points as the Xerox Lions secured their fifth victory of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup following their 46-28 win over Vodacom WP at Coca-Cola Park on Friday night.

The Xerox Lions pivot scored a try, kicked six penalties and converted all four of his side’s five-pointers as they notched up their fifth win of the season. Michael Killian scored a brace while the Johannesburg side’s other try was scored by Derick Minnie.

Vodacom Western Province, who conceded their third consecutive loss in their 2010 campaign, have now only managed to secure one log point in their last three outings in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup.

JJ Engelbrecht, Duane Vermeulen and Conrad Hoffmann who recently confirmed that he will be furthering his rugby career in Durban from next year, scored Province’s tries at Coca-Cola Park. Vodacom WP flyhalf Willem de Waal who surrendered his status as the competition’s leading points’ scorer for the first time this season kicked three penalties and two conversions. De Waal is currently in third position on 128 points.

In the other Absa Currie Cup game of the weekend, the Platinum Leopards’ winless run in the 2010 competition continued as they suffered a 27-26 defeat against the Barloworld Toyota Pumas in Potchefstroom on Friday.

Braam Pretorius, who kicked one penalty and two conversions, Shaun Venter, Johan Jackson and Tiaan Meyer were the points’ scorers for the visitors who bagged their third win of the season.

Theo van Wyk and Dumisani Matyeshana ran in tries for the Platinum Leopards, while Clayton Durand kicked four penalties and two conversions. Unfortunately their efforts were not enough to consign their side to their nine consecutive loss of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup.

WEEK 8Currie Cup Week 8

The Barloworld Toyota Pumas on Friday achieved their second victory in this season’s Absa Currie Cup after they secured a 22-21 victory over the Vodacom Blue Bulls at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

The defeat for the defending champions was their fourth loss of the 2010 competition and ensured that they ended the weekend in fourth position on the log with 24 points.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls were overtaken on the Absa Currie Cup log by the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs who handed Vodacom Western Province their first home defeat of the season during their 29-24 victory at Newlands on Friday evening.

The Bloemfontein outfit and the defending champions are both on 24 points. However the Free State side’s superior points differential over their Pretoria counterparts ensured that they ended week eight in third place.

Vodacom WP flyhalf Willem de Waal who added nine points for the Cape side is still the leading points’ scorer in this season’s competition. He is however only two points clear of The Sharks flyhalf Patrick Lambie who is on 113.

The Cape side still currently occupies second place on the log, but their second defeat in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup has meant that they are now seven points behind the log-leading The Sharks who secured their seventh consecutive win in competition following their 48-30 victory over the GWK Griquas on Friday.

The defeat for the Kimberley side in Durban relegated them to fifth position on the 2010 Absa Currie Cup standings.  They are on 23 points, but only five points behind the second positioned Vodacom WP.

The victory for The Sharks ensured that they opened up a healthy points’ gap between the rest of the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division chasing pack and themselves.

GWK Griquas winger Bjorn Basson scored four tries in this match and strengthens his lead at the top of the Absa Currie Cup Leading Try-scorers list with 13.  The Sharks’ winger Lwazi Mvovo who has scored seven five-pointers, is in second position after his eight games.

In Johannesburg, the Xerox Lions kept their semi-final aspirations alive after they recorded their fourth victory in the Absa Currie Cup following their 45-22 win over the Platinum Leopards at Coca-Cola Park on Friday.

The Xerox Lions though still occupies sixth position on the log with 20 points. However the defeat for the Platinum Leopards ensured that they continued their winless run in this season’s competition. The Platinum Leopards are at the bottom of the Absa Currie Cup log with four points.

WEEK 7Currie Cup Week 7

The Sharks ended the half way mark of the league phase in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup Premier Division as the competition’s log-leaders following their 27-16 victory over Vodacom Western Province in Durban on Saturday evening.

The KwaZulu Natal side secured their sixth consecutive victory in this season’s competition and consigned their Cape opponents to their first defeat of the 2010 competition.

Both teams have conceded one defeat in the 2010 competition. However The Sharks have notched up more bonus points for scoring four tries or more in a match than WP, and as a result are three points clear of Vodacom WP at the top of the log.

The match in Durban was a clash between South Africa’s leading defensive and attacking sides in the competition. The hosts have entertained crowds in this season’s competition with their attacking brand of rugby while their Cape opponents have captivated audiences with their tigerish and resolute defensive performances.

The Sharks shifted the ball to their wings on numerous occasions and looked to attack from within their own half throughout the game. They were rewarded with two tries in the match which were scored by winger Odwa Ndungane and No 8 Ryan Kankowski.

SA Under-20 flyhalf Patrick Lambie converted Kankowski’s five-pointer and kicked four penalties before his captain and centre Stefan Terblanche slotted a drop goal in the final minutes of the game.

Vodacom Western Province surrendered many of their try-scoring opportunities due to basic mistakes at crucial stages of the game. The visitors were also guilty of numerous handling errors throughout the match. Willem de Waal kicked three penalties and converted his side’s only try which was scored by reserve loose-forward Nick Koster.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls had GWK Griquas captain and flyhalf Naas Olivier to thank after they held on to record a 39-38 victory over their Kimberley opponents in Pretoria on Friday evening.

Olivier failed to convert Bjorn Basson’s try that was scored in the final minute of play which would have handed his side their fifth victory of the 2010 competition.

Basson managed to achieve a hat-trick of tries at Loftus Versfeld while his side’s fourth five-pointer was scored by utility back Richard Lawson. Olivier though converted three of his side’s other tries and also kicked four penalties to end the game with a personal points haul of 18.

However while the Vodacom Blue Bulls had to wait for Olivier’s failed conversion attempt before celebrating their fourth win of the competition, they managed to outscore the GWK Griquas with five tries to four.

Winger John Mametsa added a brace while flanker Derick Kuun, prop Dean Greyling and hooker Bandise Maku ran in five-pointers for the hosts. Vodacom Blue Bulls flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter kicked two penalties and added four conversions to end the game with a personal tally of 14 points.

The victory for the defending champions ensured that they ended week seven in third position on the Absa Currie Cup log with 22 points. They are now within striking distance of the second placed Vodacom Western Province.

Meanwhile the Xerox Lions had to wait for a television match official (TMO) to rule against a Barloworld Toyota Pumas try in the final minute of their game before holding on to snatch a 33-30 victory in Witbank on Friday night.

The Witbank side though achieved two log points – one, for scoring four tries, and the other for conceding a defeat within seven points. The Witbank side was awarded a penalty try while their other five-pointers were scored by Christo le Roux, Elgar Watts and Nicky Kritzinger. Watts added a penalty and kicked two conversions while Ricardo Croy also slotted one penalty.

Winger Deon van Rensburg, scrumhalf Jano Vermaak, fullback Jaco Taute and Derick Minnie scored tries for the Xerox Lions. Former Vodacom Blue Bulls pivot Burton Francis, now playing for the Johannesburg side, kicked two conversions and three penalties.

Meanwhile in the other Absa Currie Cup game on Friday evening, the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs secured their fourth win in this season’s competition following their comprehensive 57-0 victory over the Platinum Leopards in Bloemfontein.

The hosts ran in nine tries against their opponents who are currently languishing at the bottom of the log. The Platinum Leopards are also the only team who has not won a game in the Premier Division.

Vodacom Free State Cheetahs winger Philip Snyman added a brace of five-pointers while hooker Adriaan Strauss, prop Coenie Oosthuizen, centre Robert Ebersohn, flanker Hendro Scholtz, Francois Uys, Philip van der Walt and WP Nel were the other try-scores for the Bloemfontein side. Centre Meyer Bosman kicked six conversions.

WEEK 6Currie Cup Week 6

The Xerox Lions ended a four match losing streak in the Absa Currie Cup and secured their first home victory of their 2010 campaign following their 30-26 victory over the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

The Johannesburg side added two tries in the final five minutes of play thanks to the efforts of talented 19-year-old flyhalf Elton Jantjies (75th) and utility back Jannie Boshoff (77th).

Jantjies was the stand-out performer for the hosts. He controlled the game with his tactical kicking and deservedly received the Absa Man of the Match award in this game.

The Xerox Lions pivot who represented the SA Under-20s at this year’s IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina was solid on defence and looked to ignite his backline on attack throughout the game.

Jantjies kicked three penalties and also converted all three tries scored by his side. The Johannesburg side’s first try was scored by winger Deon van Rensburg which came in the 38th minute of the match.

The Vodacom Free State Cheetahs ran in two tries which were added by No 8 Ashley Johnson and reserve prop Cobus Kaldo. Flyhalf Louis Strydom who kicked four penalties, and centre Meyer Bosman, slotted the respective conversions.

The Xerox Lions are still in sixth position on the Absa Currie Cup log despite their dramatic win in Johannesburg. They are however only five points behind the fifth-placed Vodacom Free Cheetahs who are on 15 points after six matches.

Vodacom Western Province though remained in pole position at the top of the log and are still the only undefeated side in this year’s competition following their 15-12 victory over the Vodacom Blue Bulls at Newlands on Saturday.

Both sides were missing many of their first choice international stars who were not considered for selection due to the forthcoming Vodacom Tri-Nations clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks in Soweto on Saturday.

Vodacom WP held most of the territory and possession advantage in the first half but only boasted a 6-3 lead at the break. The hosts launched numerous attacking plays close to the Vodacom Blue Bulls’ try line during the first 40 minutes but failed to break down the superb defensive effort of their Pretoria opponents.

The hosts were also solid on defence and continued their form as the competition’s best defensive side.  As a result of both sides who gave very little away on defence, no tries were scored in this match.

All the points in this game were scored thanks to the kicking efforts of both flyhalves. Willem de Waal kicked five penalties for the hosts while Jacques-Louis Potgieter notched up all the points added by the defending champions at Newlands by adding four penalties.

While the victory for Province kept them at the top of the Absa Currie Cup log at the conclusion of week six, the defeat for the Vodacom Blue Bulls consigned them to fourth position after six games.

The defending champions are now 10 points behind Vodacom WP, but three away from the GWK Griquas who are currently in third position on the log. The Kimberley side bounced back last Saturday’s 50-3 defeat to Province and comprehensively outclassed the Barloworld Toyota Pumas 58-25 on Friday.

GWK Griquas fullback Riaan Viljoen and scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius both added a brace of tries while Cecil Kemp, Frikkie Spies, Rocco Jansen and Rudi Vogt also scored five-pointers for the hosts. Flyhalf Naas Olivier kicked six conversions and two penalties.

The Barloworld Toyota Pumas managed to score three tries which were added by Elgar Watts, Shaun Venter and Junior Bester. The former Boland Cavaliers pivot Watts, kicked two conversions and two penalties for the Witbank side.

In the other Absa Currie Cup game of the weekend, The Sharks secured maximum points from their trip to Phokeng on Friday evening when they comprehensively defeated the Platinum Leopards 51-6 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The Durban side ran in seven tries which were scored by centre Stefan Terblanche, winger Lwazi Mvovo, prop Patric Cilliers, No 8 Willem Alberts, fullback Louis Ludik and scrumhalf Rory Kockott.

The Sharks’ centre sensation Patrick Lambie continued his impressive form in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup on Friday evening and kicked two penalties and three conversions. Kockott also converted two tries.

The Platinum Leopards’ points were scored by flyhalf Neill Jacobs who added two penalties for the hosts who are currently the only team in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division without a win after six games.

The victory for The Sharks ensured that they ended week six in second position on the log, one behind Vodacom Western Province. These sides will go head-to-head in Durban next Saturday as the 2010 Absa Currie Cup concludes its first round’s action.

The Cape side outplayed their opponents in the second half at GWK Park and bagged maximum points from this game after scoring six tries in this fixture. All six five-pointers were scored in the final 40 minutes of the match.

Centre Juan de Jongh who claimed the Absa Man of the Match award in Kimberley for his outstanding performance in this fixture, flanker Pieter Louw, fullback Conrad Jantjies, winger Gio Aplon and reserve flyhalf Lionel Cronje and substitute hooker Deon Fourie were the try scorers for the visitors.

GWK Griquas’ only points were added thanks to one penalty kick by captain and flyhalf Naas Olivier. The hosts, who conceded their first home defeat of the season after securing victories over the Xerox Lions and The Sharks, ended the weekend in fourth place on the log with 15 points while WP are still in pole position on 23.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls secured their third victory of the 2010 competition after they defeated a spirited Platinum Leopards outfit 43-38 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night.

Eleven tries were scored this game. The defending champions ran in six five-pointers while their opponents added five.

Talented Vodacom Blue Bulls winger Gerhard van den Heever added a brace while flankers Dewald Potgieter and Derick Kuün; scrumhalf Francois Hougaard and centre Stefan Watermeyer were the other players to score tries for the hosts.

Vodacom Blue Bulls flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter kicked five conversions and one penalty. Platinum Leopards’ Michael Bondesio, who claimed the Absa Man of the Match award at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria for his solid performance at scrumhalf, scored a brace while Walter Venter, Ligtoring Landman and Dumisani Matyeshana added the other tries for the visitors.

Niell Jacobs and Clayton Durand added the conversions for the Platinum Leopards. Jacobs also kicked one penalty.

The victory for the Vodacom Blue Bulls ensured that they ended week five of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup in third position on the log with 16 points. They are however still seven points behind the log-leading Vodacom WP.

The defending champions, who now prepare for their next assignment in this season’s competition against Province at Newlands on Saturday, are also five points behind the second-placed The Sharks who secured their fourth win of the competition following their 48-19 victory over the Xerox Lions on Saturday.

Flanker Jacques Botes celebrated his 100th Absa Currie Cup appearance in fine style as the Durban side achieved maxim points from this game after scoring five tries.

Patrick Lambie who claimed the Absa Currie Cup Player of the Month award for July kick-started his career at flyhalf for The Sharks by scoring 28 points. The SA Under-20 fullback added a try and kicked five penalties and four conversions.

The Sharks winger Lwazi Mvovo continued his impressive form in this season’s competition by scoring two five-pointers while hooker Craig Burden and Botes also added their names to the try-scoring sheet for the hosts.

While Lambie starred for The Sharks, his SA U20 teammate Elton Jantjies also excelled at pivot for the Xerox Lions. The Johannesburg flyhalf scored 14 points by kicking four penalties and a conversion. Winger Deon van Rensburg scored the Xerox Lions’ only try of the match.

In the other Absa Currie Cup game of the weekend the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs ran in six tries as they defeated the Barloworld Toyota Pumas 45-30 in Witbank on Saturday.

Flanker Hendro Scholtz scored two tries while centres Robert Ebersohn and Meyer Bosman; winger Jongi Nokwe and fullback Hennie Daniller added the other five-pointers for the Bloemfontein side.

Vodacom Free State Cheetahs flyhalf Louis Strydom kicked one penalty and four conversions while utility back Sias Ebersohn added two conversions.

WEEK 4Currie Cup Week 4

The Vodacom Blue Bulls got their Absa Currie Cup title defence back on track at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday following their 32-18 victory over the Xerox Lions in Johannesburg.

The win ensured that the defending champions ended a two game losing streak in the 2010 competition while the hosts however conceded their third consecutive defeat this season.

Flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter produced a flawless kicking performance at Coca-Cola Park and added 27 points for the Vodacom Blue Bulls. The pivot scored a try and kicked six penalties while he also converted both tries scored by the Pretoria side. The talented Vodacom Blue Bulls winger  Gerhard van den Heever added the other five-pointer for the visitors.

Xerox Lions winger Deon van Rensburg and loose forward Warren Whiteley were the try scorers for the hosts who played an attacking brand of rugby throughout the game.  However tigerish defence by the Pretoria side ensured that their Johannesburg opponents conceded numerous turnovers and penalties at critical periods of the game. SA Under-20 flyhalf Elton Jantjies kicked two penalties and converted Whiteley’s five-pointer.

The victory for the defending champions ensured that they ended week four in fourth position on the Absa Currie Cup log with 11 points. The Vodacom Blue Bulls are now seven points behind the log-leading Vodacom Western Province who continued their impressive run in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup following their convincing 54-13 win over the Barloworld Toyota Pumas at Newlands on Friday.

It was the Cape side’s second consecutive five-point victory of 2010 competition after they bagged maximum points from their 42-23 result against the Platinum Leopards in Potchefstroom last Friday.

Province secured the bonus point for scoring four tries at the stroke of half time when captain Anton van Zyl latched on to a pass from scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann before breaking the Pumas defence to score his five-pointer. Flanker Pieter Louw though was the first WP player to add his name to the try-scoring sheet before Springbok winger Gio Aplon dazzled the Newlands crowd with his two tries.

Vodacom Western Province coach Allister Coetzee afforded many of his young bench players such as flyhalf Lionel Cronje, scrumhalf Louis Schreuder and winger JJ Engelbrecht game time in the second half.

The hosts conceded two tries after the break which was scored by the Barloworld Toyota Pumas’ Shaun Venter and Torsten van Jaarsveld. However WP managed to add three further five-pointers. Louw, thanks to the efforts of his forward pack, mauled his way over the try line to score his second five-pointer of the evening, Engelbrecht dotted down in the corner while former SA Under-20 flyhalf Cronje scored an intercept try.

Province flyhalf Willem de Waal notched up 15 points by kicking three penalties and three conversions. Cronje converted his own try and the second five-pointer scored by Louw. Elgar Watts kicked one penalty for the Barloworld Toyota Pumas.

The Sharks secured their first away victory of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup following their stunning 25-13 win over the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Centre Patrick Lambie, who represented the SA Under-20s during this year’s IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina, scored 20 points for his provincial side which included two tries during the final 10 minutes of the game played at Vodacom Park.

The Sharks’ other try scorer was prop Eugene van Staden who also crashed over the try line during the second half. Lambie was also responsible for his side’s goal-kicking and added two penalties and two conversions.

Handling errors at crucial periods of the game denied the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs many scoring opportunities throughout the game. As a result the hosts were only rewarded with one try which was added by scrumhalf Tewis de Bruyn in the first half. Flyhalf Louis Strydom kicked the conversion and also slotted two penalty kicks at goal.

In the other Absa Currie Cup game of the weekend, the GWK Griquas secured their third win of the 2010 competition following their 41-27 victory over the Platinum Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday evening.

Flyhalf Naas Olivier who passed the 600-point mark in his Absa Currie Cup career after he added 21 points in the game, scored a try and kicked two penalties and five conversions.

The Kimberley side’s other tries were added by Frikkie Spies, Sarel Pretorius and Bjorn Basson who ran in two five-pointers in the match.

Michael Bondesio also scored a brace of tries for the Platinum Leopards while Palm Koch ran in the hosts’ third try of the game. Clayton Durand and Niell Jacobs converted the tries. Both Jacobs and Durand also kicked respective penalty kicks.

The result for the Platinum Leopards though ensured that they remained at the bottom of the log and is still the only team who are yet to secure a log point in this season’s Absa Currie Cup.

WEEK 3Currie Cup Week 3

The Vodacom Blue Bulls conceded only their third Absa Currie Cup home defeat at Loftus Versfeld in two seasons on Saturday evening after they suffered a 25-23 defeat against the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in Pretoria.

Substitute hooker Skipper Badenhorst dived in at the corner during the final seconds of the game to level the scores at 23-23 before utility back Sias Ebersohn kicked a touchline conversion to steer the Bloemfontein side to their second win of the competition.

The defending champions out-scored the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs with two tries to one. Derick Kuün and centre Stefan Watermeyer both added five-pointers for the hosts. Flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter, playing against his former team, converted both tries and also kicked three penalties for the Vodacom Blue Bulls.

However the Bloemfontein side remained in touch of the score thanks to the solid kicking performance of their pivot Louis Strydom. The Vodacom Free State Cheetahs flyhalf added five penalties with the boot and regularly kept the hosts under pressure due to his tactical kicking throughout the game. Ebersohn who kicked the final conversion on the match also added a penalty.

The victory for the visitors ensured that they ended week three in fourth position on the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division log while the Vodacom Blue Bulls, who suffered their second defeat of the 2010 competition, are currently in fifth place.

The GWK Griquas bounced back to winning ways after going down 33-26 to the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last Friday when they edged the Xerox Lions by 26-20 in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

This was the second home win for the Kimberley side in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup following their victory over The Sharks in week one.

Both teams scored two tries in this game played at GWK Park. The Xerox Lions who scored two five-pointers before the break thanks to scrumhalf Jano Vermaak and lock George Earle, struggled to cross their opponents’ try line in the second half. Flyhalf Herkie Kruger converted both tries and also kicked two penalties later during the game.

The GWK Griquas’ two tries were added in the second half. The hosts threatened the Xerox Lions’ try line before the break but struggled to maximize their opportunities into points due to handling errors and ill-discipline at crucial periods of the game.

Prop Jacobie Adriaanse and winger Bjorn Basson added the Kimberley side’s tries while captain and flyhalf Naas Olivier added the two conversions. The GWK skipper also kicked two penalties.

Vodacom Western Province continued their impressive start in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup Premier Division following their 42-23 win over the Platinum Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday evening.

The Cape side, who ended week three in pole position on the log, bagged their first five-point victory of the season after scoring six tries in this fixture.

Prop Brok Harris, winger Frikkie Welsh, centre Paul Bosch, flanker Pieter Louw, and replacements Conrad Hoffmann and Pieter Myburgh all added their names to the try-scoring sheet in Profert Olien Park. Flyhalf Willem de Waal kicked three conversions and three penalties.

Deon Scholtz added a brace of tries while Jovan Bowles added the hosts’ third try against a Vodacom WP defence who has only conceded 34 points after three games. Jean Tiedt kicked a conversion and a solitary penalty while Neill Jacobs added the game’s only drop goal for the Platinum Leopards.

Stefan Terblanche celebrated his 100th Absa Currie Cup game in fine style on Friday evening after The Sharks achieved maximum points against the Pumas during their 27-17 victory at The Absa Stadium Durban.

The Sharks flanker Keegan Daniel scored a hat-trick of tries while Charl McLeod added his side’s fourth five-pointer to bag a valuable log point for scoring four tries.

Patrick Lambie who represented the SA Under-20s during the 2010 IRB Junior World Champion in Argentina in June kicked two conversions and one penalty.
