CONGRATULATIONS TO ENGLAND RUGBY ON WINNING THE RBS SIX NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011
And...
CONGRATULATIONS TO ANDREA MASI: PLAYER OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP 2011
It may have been England that lifted the Championship Trophy, and Italy that scored the Wooden Spoon, but in the player stakes, it was Italy on top all the way!
Italy's Andrea Masi who resoundingly saw off some stiff competition from England, Ireland, Wales and France to take the trophy for the Azzurri with 30% of the public's vote. It was fellow Azzurri and 6 Nations debutant, Fabio Semenzato who came in second with 12%, whilst Ireland's Sean O'Brien and England's Toby Flood gained 10% each.
The remaining men of the matches from weeks one to four, Chris Ashton, James Haskell, Tom Palmer, Thierry Dusautoir, Maxime Medard, Sam Warburton, James Hook and Ronan O'Gara had to just be content with being nominated.
THE 2011 RBS 6 Nations Championship for the first time in the Championship's history kicked off on a Friday [and the last!] on the 4th February with Wales v England in Cardiff. The Schedule was finalised with a view to showcasing this fantastic fixture and make this great Rugby occasion available to as many people as possible.
In another exciting development 2011 also saw the Irish team return to their traditional home in Lansdowne Road at the new Aviva Stadium after 4 wonderful seasons in their adopted home of Croke Park.
The final weekend of the 2011 Championship again provide plenty of excitement with 3 exhilarating fixtures: Scotland v Italy, Ireland v England and France v Wales.
And along with interviews, live updates and match reports, we have for your entertainment the notorious former England captain, Will Carling's inimitable preview of each week of the RBS Six Nations...so hit the preview link for the latest video, and to visit Will's Virtual Clubhouse, hit the either Carling's face(!) or the Rucku logo on your right...
The brilliant match highlights are brought to you courtesy of some terribly clever peeps at The Rugby Vault, so if you're not in the UK and can't access the BBC iPlayer to see the matches in full [what is all that about, eh?!?! ...thought the world wide web was all about breaking boundaries!], then you can still catch up with the rugby...
For all the latest , you need only pop over to our news section for updates on injuries etc. Match day squad announcement will be published below weekly...
For a rather interesting [though ever so slightly anorakish] breakdown of the records set during the Championship over the decades, going right back to the beginning in 1883, just hit the records button...
Last year's Grand Slam winners, France began their bid for their 10th title on Saturday 5th February at 6pm CET against Scotland.
THE LAUNCH
The launch of the RBS Six Nations 2011 was on Wednesday 26th January, at The Hurlingham Club.
So here's a few familiar faces during the down time...
And here's a some of what the powers that be had to say...
RBS Six Nations CEO John Feehan announced the Friday night games experiment is over. The Championship has dabbled with the idea for two years now, and gauging the temperature of fans one assumes, following the opening spectacle at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Friday 4th February where Wales face the might of England, matches in 2012 and 2013 will be played two-up on Saturday and one on Sunday with the exception of Super Saturdays...Hallelujah!
MARTIN Johnson on Warren Gatland's attack on Hartley: "It's not something I've ever done. You are potentially giving ammunition to the opposition. It's something he has chosen to do, but ultimately people will remember the game.
"There's always a bit of spice between England and Wales... It's about pressure and how people react to it. Where Wales are, they are under pressure as a team with their performances and not winning a game for a while."
WARREN Gatland on Johnno: "All coaches are under pressure. At least my chief exec hasn't told me I have to finish in top two."
DECLAN Kidney on his plethora of injuries: "You never like to see guys injured - we know how much playing for Ireland means to those guys," Kidney said. "They'd be gutted were they to lose out at this stage of the season but we've also tried to build a squad over the last few years and this will be the test of that."
THE delightfully talkative Nick Mallett on the England job: "The performance director role with the RFU is not a job I'd get a lot of pleasure from. My real enthusiasm comes from working with players. I love coaching, getting out there and working with players and I'm not so interested in sitting on committees."
ANDY Robinson on Scotland winning 5 of their last 6 matches: "We have confidence and there's a very good team spirit. The guys are understanding their roles, but the New Zealand game (a 49-3 loss) was a good reminder for us of where we are.
"The France game is the perfect challenge for that. Everybody's saying how unpredictable the French are, but we have huge respect for the way they play the game and the threats that they have."
