TOULOUSE 18 - 12 TOULON
Saturday 9 June 2012
STADE DE FRANCE
KO: 18:00 CET HT: 9-9 Att: c.80,000
IT was just as all expected - a clash of the kickers - which saw Toulouse come out on top to claim the Orange Top 14 Championship for the second consecutive year, while Toulon lost out on their chance to be title-holders for the first time in 20 years. The pace was fast and furious from the outset as both sides tried to out-fox their opponents with clever chips and high balls.
Jonny Wilkinson drew first blood for Toulon with an early penalty. But Luke McAlister was not to be out done and soon levelled the score. This pendulum of points continued as both fly-halves showed off their range and accuracy throughout the half.
Toulouse had obvious dominance in the scrum, forcing penalties and free-kicks from Toulon with ease. But Toulon had a solid lineout and excellent rucking, which evened out their lack of strength in the scrum. By half-time there was nothing to separate the sides, both showing skilful open play and brilliant defensive work, leaving no tries to be had and the fly-halves doing all the talking. The score was 9-9 and everything was still to play for at the restart.
After the break, the Toulon pack returned with a gutsier determination and this soon showed in their much improved scrum. Toulouse had to work harder to retain possession and even gave away a penalty at the set piece, which they had struggled with so badly in the first 40 minutes. Both kickers added swift penalties again to level the scores at 12-all and the battle raged on. Toulouse were beginning to get rather more physical in open play, Thierry Dusautoir crunching Steffon Armitage in a tackle and several scuffles breaking out.
Wilkinson missed a 3-pointer from halfway and Benjamin Lapeyre mirrored this just a few minutes later. Both sides began to field their replacements, and then both went down to 14 men as William Servat and Sebastien Bruno were shown yellows for trading blows. Toulon gave Toulouse a few moments of worry as they swept towards the tryline, but the Toulousain defence covered well and managed to halt the offence.
Toulon returned to full force for all of two minutes before Davit Kubriashvili earned himself a spell in the sin bin, and McAlister punished the opposition with another three points and the lead. But the incumbent champions were unable to use their extra man to find the whitewash thanks to some truly stunning defence from Toulon.
With twelve minutes remaining, Toulouse broke the swing of scoring and the ever-accurate McAlister added another penalty to create a 6-point void between the tallies, 18-12. Toulon surged into enemy territory for the closing minutes but their efforts were not enough. In the end, Toulouse walked away triumphant as Toulon were unable to produce the try necessary to claw back the necessary winning points.

SEMI FINAL 1
TOULOUSE 24 - 15 CASTRES OLYMPIQUE
Stadium de Toulouse
KO: 20:45 HT: 15-12
BOTH sides showed off their kicking prowess in a fast paced game, but it was Toulouse who came out on top, beating Castres to a place in the final. The whole game was rife with penalties, with neither side managing to pull off a decent scrum and committing several infringements at the breakdown. However, the booting abilities were something to behold; long-range, tricky shots flew beautifully through the posts whilst war was raged in open play.
Toulouse were first off the mark as Luke McAlister slotted his first huge punt of the night. The centre produced a spectacular display throughout the game and was the homeside’s ultimate weapon. And McAlister swiftly doubled the tally with another 3-pointer before his side flew towards the Castres defence only to be rebuffed.
The visitors responded with some excellent play, which allowed Pierre Bernard to get his side on the scoreboard with a penalty. But Toulouse decided to show off, slowing down the ball from the ruck before popping it to Lionel Beauxis, who landed a perfect drop goal. However, Castres decided two could play at that game and equalled their style with one of their own from Bernard just 2 minutes later. Soon the tallies were levelled, thanks to yet more pin-point kicking from Bernard, and each team was battling to pierce the opposition’s defence. McAlister edged the homeside in front again, whilst Bernard missed his chance to draw level soon after.
Florian Fritz picked up a yellow after Toulouse struggled at the lineout, and Marc Andreu was left unconscious briefly before being tended to. All of this was followed by a moment of panic as Castres stole the ball and Max Evans raced towards the tryline. However, the TMO confirmed he was held up, but during the excitement Timoci Matanavou earned himself a yellow card, so Toulouse did not emerge completely unscathed. With a two man advantage, this should have been Castres time to shine, but all they could manage was for Romain Teulet to add an easy penalty before McAlister nullified it, leaving the score 15-12 at the intermission.
It was much of the same for the final stage of the match, with Castres tying the tallies soon after the restart. However, Toulouse showed more dominance in this half and closed down the visitors whilst adding to their score, thanks to the magnificent work of McAlister.
Castres continued to have spurts of pace and caused some threatening situations for the homeside, but it was all to no avail. Meanwhile, Toulouse fervently tried to pierce the Castres lines and both sides were throwing in some seriously heavy tackles.
Although play was scrappy at times and no try-scoring occurred, the game was gutsy and action-packed, exactly what was expected from a semi-final. Toulouse are through to the final with all credit to McAlister, whose starring role handed over victory.
